Department of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Process

WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AND ENERGY PROCESSES

[Image] Dale Wittmer Thank you for taking your valuable time to visit this webpage for our department.  I would like to take a moment to welcome you whether you are a new student, a prospective student, a parent, an alumni, a company representative or a web browser.  Our department at SIUC is rather unique in that the Faculty come from a broad range of backgrounds and expertise.  We currently have 17 Faculty members in the department with backgrounds in Mechanical Engineering, Energy and Fuel, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, and other associated fields of engineering.  With the exception of some laboratory classes, all classes in our department are taught by Professors and not graduate students.  The specific topic of a class being taught is within the direct expertise of that Faculty member.  This translates into better education and training and helps our students do well in their efforts to become professional engineers (licensed by the State of Illinois) and to obtain jobs.  Currently we have about 300 students including 45 graduate students in our department.  Students can choose to study various disciplines within the ME degree; thermal, mechanical, design, energy, and materials.  Our class sizes are small and since they are taught by Professors, the students have an opportunity to be recognized as students and not as a number.  Our Faculty are friendly and easy to find outside of class.  Remember, we are all here to help our students get an education and have fun doing it.  Engineering is a tough discipline.  Students have to go to class, do their assignment on time and study hard.  There are many student organizations that support the engineering work ethic and also allow the students to have a good time while working with other students.  We offer many avenues of support and if there is ever any question, my door is always open to the students and their parent to provide information and support.  Please take a look at our department brochure here for additional information about our department.  If you need help please contact my office and we will see that you get it.  Thank you again for visiting our website.  Please be patient with us as we continue to try to improve your access to information about SIUC and our department.  Check back often for new information.

Sincerely,

Dale Wittmer

Professor Dale E. Wittmer, Chair
